Show me the money

Second day of the Making a living talks for very much focused on getting down to the business. How to become a freelancer, setting up your own business and advice about how to promote yourself.

Some may think it’s not important at this stage of their studies but sooner you start the better you will do in the futute. It might be hard for some if they still haven’t defined their style  and are not sure where it can fit but there is no better time than now to start thinking about it.

Chris Walker was one of those who managed to get his work funded and promoted through Kickstarter. When you look at the trailer you will know why no publisher would publish it but there are other ways around it. I am glad I am not the only one with messed up ideas.

Starting is always hard and that is why some may postpone it but it has to be done if you want to get into industry.

The financial side of it all has been discussed in details as well. This is what people find boring and confusing at times but this is as important as promoting yourself. I understand that for teenagers who still rely on their parents and even still live at home this must be daunting but I like the fact that we are exposed to all this at such an early stage of studies.

If you want to do this for a living you have to do your calculations. Being an illustrator is not just having fun drawing but there is a heavy package that comes with it. It may sound scary to some but because I have worked in finance for few years and in accountancy before I joined University so I am alright with it. I guess this is one of the advantages of being a mature student.
