Oivind Hovland “In a nutshell my aim is to tell a story using whatever means I have”.

On my way to uni there is always a lot of people around giving newspapers away and I always swiftly avoid taking them. Today however I was kind of forced to take “TimeOut” and I am glad I have as I found inside illustrations of this artist and it immediately caught my attention.

I have done my research and found more from this UK based Norwegian illustrator. What struck me is the use of colour. The combination of colour is wisely picked and it works so well. Each image has its own unique colour palette and even though the images are colourful he still managed to look it controlled and relatively toned down.

Breaking point

Each of his illustrations has a message and story behind it. I would say that his art is not abstract and the message is very clearly illustrated. That is exactly how I create my pieces but also by adding the element of humour to it. Obviously I don’t have this level of skills.

His portfolio is very rich and he has a great experience working with for instance The Telegraph, The Financial Times, Time Out London, The Spectator and many more big names. His artwork is on high demand. You can check it for yourself:

What I have noticed most of the images have in common is that rough finish that kind of looks like an old photograph. That adds a bit of texture to the image.
